Jonathan J. Bereman joined Hoffenberg & Block, LLC in 2016. Prior to joining the firm, Jonathan worked as an associate attorney at a prominent family law office in Chicago, where he represented clients in all aspects of family law, including divorce, allocation of parental responsibilities (formally known as custody), parenting time, child support, maintenance, prenuptial and postnuptial matters, same-sex civil unions and marriage, surrogacy, adoption, and all matters related to families. Through his litigation experience, Jonathan has developed a reputation for vigorously defending his client’s interests in settlement negotiations and at trial to successfully achieve the most favorable outcome for his clients.
In 2015 and 2016, Jonathan was named an “Emerging Lawyer” by the Leading Lawyers Network. The Leading Lawyers Network recognizes Emerging Lawyers who represent the top 2% of lawyers who are under the age of 40 or practicing law for less than 10 years. The Leading Lawyers Network selects top lawyers in Illinois based on their legal skills, reputation and experience. The distinction has been earned by fewer than 2% of all lawyers licensed to practice law in Illinois. Also in 2016, Jonathan was named one of the “10 Best” family law attorneys in Chicago by the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys for his dedication to client satisfaction. An exclusive honor extended only to those who have achieved unparalleled success but most importantly have done so for the benefit of their clients. The selection process is based on client and peer nominations and the American Institute of Family Law Attorneys’ own independent evaluation.
Jonathan also worked as a volunteer attorney at the Legal Aid Society of Metropolitan Family Services, and continues his lifelong devotion to helping families in need by serving on the Associate Board of the Legal Aid Society. Through the Associate Board, Jonathan has dedicated his time to provide pro bono work, fundraising, and raising awareness of the Legal Aid Society’s charitable work in the greater Chicagoland area.
While in law school, Jonathan gained significant courtroom experience working in the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, where he successfully prosecuted several trials while seeking the rehabilitation of at-risk youth. Jonathan also worked as a licensed extern with the Federal Public Defender’s Office for the Southern District of Ohio, where he advocated for his clients’ rights in Federal court. During his last year at the University of Dayton, Jonathan also competed for the school’s National Mock Trial team.
Jonathan grew up in Fort Wayne, IN, and graduated from Indiana University. Jonathan also spent two years at Indiana Institute of Technology, where he was a member of the 6-time NAIA national champion baseball team. Outside the office, Jonathan enjoys spending time with his family, cooking, reading, traveling, and playing golf. You also won’t catch him missing a Seattle Mariners baseball game or Indiana Hoosiers basketball game.
